05:34 pm - Lovely
Here I am at the Portland OC, ready to go at noon just as declared before this time at home, and...no load yet. Zzzzzzzz...

Recovery my ass! Open my 401K statement to find my portfolio just lost over 10% of it's value in the LAST QUARTER. So where was this thing when the stock market was busy going crazy not so long ago? Oh that's right. As long as the banksters are making out like gangsters, the rest of us can go to hell, even though we're the ones really buying their yachts and all. $20 BILLION in bonuses, not even a single pink slip. Capone never had it so good, and damn straight if you or I pulled this crap, at best we'd be looking for a new job, if not behind bars. Where are frippin perp walks for Sutekh's sake?!!

Oh, and Oregon's unemployment rate still sits at a lovely 10.5 percent.

06:12 am - Back now.
Had been without any net access for a few days. An post of things archived while away will clear up why.

Of all the bloody reasons, and more!Collapse )

As for after that, yesterday while at the Utah welcome center along I70 saw the cutest little long haired black and orange calico shading itself under the local flora. Of course it was feral and ran as soon as I got anywhere near.

Oh! Now that the net is back, I need to order a USB case for a SATA notebook drive so I can use the one I took out of the new laptop as an external. I did purchase one case already but it's only ATA, and has a different interface for the drive. Whoops. Gusse that case goes to Freegeek. While there though, I'll look for a power supply for the desktop my sister gave me, and see what size ATA drives they have. If I find one good enough, I'll keep the case and shove the bought one either into the case or the old laptop. Then that'll make two external drives. Whooha.

Yay verily. So much for that.

03:42 pm - You know, work is starting to really cheese me off.
This is just farking unbelievable. After "taking measures to insure sustainability" which for us translated into...

  • a pay cut of about 5%

  • eliminating our 401K match

  • dropping short term disability coverage all together

NOW they have the GALL to go and BUY another trucking company? In fact, this will be the second load of their stuff we'll be pulling outta there. So, just how many of these moves were made just because you can?

And here's the kicker. They passed out a driver satisfaction survey last month. Do you REALLY want to know?

These are the kind of moves that will come back to bite you in the ass, hard.

01:49 am - Yes, I think I know what it is now.
Spoke a little too early on that last post because I come back later and bamf, blank screen. Don't know when, but the laptop crashed.

Now lucky for me, I DID find one of the old memory modules and swapped it back. Boot, comp works fine. Shut down, try putting new memory in again and...not even a BIOS screen. I think we have our culprit, and dammit, a brand new Kingston memory module too. And just my luck, I have no idea where the receipt for that thing went.

Yup. Definitely the memory. Put the old one back in again, and boots right up. But dammit, with only 256meg RAM, it might as well be dead because it's just gonna swap file like CRAZY, and will run slower than mole asses.

So, time to order a new module, and wait.

03:33 pm - Fix my engine and the tire goes flat...
Trying to keep on top of all the breakages, and having a hard time. The cover to the G key has broken off the new laptop. Of course, the only way to repair it is to replace the entire...keyboard. No of course you can't just buy the little plastic piece that broke. That would be too easy and cheap.

The plug to the 12V cooler melted a few days ago. Of course, Igloo doesn't have a replacement part for it, but thankfully a third party does. Found it at the Petro just outside Spokane, WA.

But now we need to run through the Gary OC on our way, since the AUX input jack to the radio's totally come undone, so no MP3s for us till it's fixed. Argh.

AND, found out I have no cell reception from just east of Couer D'Alene, ID allll the way to Bismarck, ND. Somewhere in between there and Jamestown, it came back, but I didn't pinpoint the exact location. Of course, had a bunch of txts waiting when I got back online...

01:24 pm - Still Raining, Still Dreaming...
Bit of a hangup waiting in Lyman, WY waiting for chain laws to be lifted along I80. Yes folks, it's that time already. Sittin time. Thankfully it only lasted about 90 mins and I was able to get rolling, with enough time left still for on time delivery. So yay for that. Cept in NV I have absofrigginlutely NO cell reception. And probably won't until Reno at best. Bah.

Well, it's not the battery causing it to crash. Took it out, worked fine for a while, then one moment I looked over and...it crashed. So now I'm not sure WTF to do. Guess try another OS is about it now.

03:02 pm - Computer Annoyances
Last evening on the old laptop IE got hijacked by an obvious malware site, claiming to have antivirus applications it wanted to install. Yeah right. First of all, if it really WAS an antivirus site, it wouldn't hijack my browser, NOR would it keep trying to get me to download .exe files. Dumbasses. If ever there was a legitimate candidate for DDOS attacks... Anyway, the only way to get rid of it was to go into Task Manager and kill IE totally. Try and infect MY laptop will you?

Anyway, immediately updated the antispyware programs and started running them. But for some reason the antivirus updater keeps saying "Error in WinInet library." whatever that means. Tried pinging the update site with no success. Perhaps it's gone down for a few days? I dunno.

In load news, looks like we got the next load after this one, going westward. Let's see what happens.

04:33 pm - Whoever says we have the greatest health care in the world should be SHOT!
We have both been running around, calling and calling back all flipping day trying to get the mate in to see an orthopedist for her arm. After telling us once that yes, they did have all the paperwork and such form the emergency room, NOW they they us they don't, AND we can't see them until Friday or perhaps even Monday!

In the meantime, her pain meds have run out today, so we've got THAT issue to deal with as well. Thank heavens my sister is an emergency med nurse, and so gave us the pointer of substituting 1000 mgs of Extra Strength Tylenol and 400 mgs of ibuprofen for what we've got. Seems to work...okay so far. At least theoretically we can get to an urgent care clinic to get the prescription refilled.

Fark. This is what happens when you put the bean counters in charge.

11:14 am - So.
Today is our first full day in Laredo TX. We are now officially on vacation. Well, almost anyway. Just need to clean out the truck and get it back to the yard really. And yes, completely clear out this time. Eccch. We looked at a few storage places down here and will be reserving our spot in just a moment. Don't need much, 10 X 10 will more than suffice. And it'll be cheaper than renting a vehicle capable of storing everything from the truck anyway.

Which I've done already. Picked up a Ford Focus which one would think would be enough to hold us and all our camping gear. Seems like once that's packed up, what's remaining in the truck will only be this tiny little pile we'll stack up in the center of the storage space. There's really not that much I can't imagine not taking, save for maybe my toolboxes and some maps and such.

Could have picked up a PT Cruiser, but I've done that already and found it a bit lacking. Seems to be part of this modern trend towards cars with this chopped top look, which though I'm sure it's more aerodynamic, it also cuts down on my ability to see out. To be honest, I'll sacrifice a MPG or two in exchange for seeing better where the hell I'm going and what the hell is coming at me.

While we're here we'll check out the Goodwill across the highway because we forgot to take any cooking pots (whoops!) and I have only one pair of shorts that aren't ripped somewhere. I'm gonna need THOSE down here! I can tell ya that.

And in sports news, Phillies got turned around and won it 5-1 last night. Bigger news though is the the Padres overcame a six run deficit to win 11-7. In Petco Park. Wow. Did the light finally go on? They've won at least three in a row now. Stay tuned. We're gonna find out.

06:09 am - Just one of those things.
Ah well. Work assignment says drop and hook at the shipper. Is it really? Noooo... live load. Made all the more fun because delivery is a live UNLOAD.

Jeebus, whatever happened to 70% drop and hook anyway? At least it does mean I get to update this thing a little more. Le sigh. Wish the words could just come springing out my fingertips but that doesn't seem to be the case any more.

03:20 pm - Yes, just how complicated CAN you make it?
Jeebus. Transfers from two different accounts to two different accounts (four total), plus bills, plus two separate transactions to the Xmas club, PLUS budget work, entering everything into checkbooks AND Quicken.

Speaking of which, BAH! Intuit has decided my version of Quicken is now too old to do ANY kind of online activity. Can still enter transactions manually of course, but no downloading, no automatic balancing, none of that. Bah! And my version's not THAT old! 2006! Oh, for the love of Sutekh.

Not to mention that fancy trackball I bought not too long ago has a broken roller now. The rubber piece will shift on the metal shaft and jam, making it impossible to move the pointer to the right at least. Superglue to the rescue! Still, more BAH!

And in other "Oh bloody farking wonderful!" news, looks like Athena is using oil AND coolant with no apparent leaks, pointing to a leaking head gasket. Joy of joys. Few hundred dollars to replace THERE!

My shoulder's...better, but by no means 100 percent yet. Still sore and tight a bit.

You'd think our life was falling apart...

Joy. Now the cell phone's display has decided to up and die. Everything else still appears to work, but how the heck am I supposed to see what kind of signal strength I'm getting, let alone use the address book and all that? Grrrr. Took a look to see if I could get it apart enough and see if it's just a loose connection, but it takes these tiny torx head screws that I don't have the right tool for. I'm sure I could find that tool online, but that wouldn't do me any bloody good till I get home on the 24th!

Wonder if there's a place I can go on the road...

02:06 am - Crisis? What Crisis?
Kudos if you get the reference in the title.

Great, so we're going to bail out the banks who crafted up this house of cards in the first place, and once again leave taxpayers holding the bag on the way up since they fell for this claptrap, AND on the way down. Granted, there's talk about restructuring mortgages, but why do I get the sense talk is all it will come to?

Once again, the ol' double standard kicks in. Those at the top are free to carney us blind, and the rest are sheep to be fleeced at will.

Of course, the Lasseiz Faire'ers are going to somehow twist it around to blaming gov't regulations, when oversight is practically non-existent to begin with.

Maybe the problem is the so many think that credit and monopolies are good ideas?

Ah well, you know what they say about those who fail to learn from history.

Let a few get too big for their britches and they gotta take the rest of us down with 'em.

02:40 pm - The Annual Valentine's Day Post
On the agenda.

#1. Same as last year. I still find this holiday obnoxious and annoying in that I really don't NEED an annual reminder to love, especially those close to me! If I did, I'd be in serious trouble!

#2. Okay, I understand others are none too fond of this holiday either, due to it shoving their unintentionally single status in their face. Okay, to these, I say "Act as if...". Write a love note to the one you don't have...yet. Work on your concept of the ideal mate. That kind of thing. Screw it. Take yourself on a date! Why not?

On a totally unrelated note, FUN! We have whiteout conditions in Salt Lake City! It's officially a blizzard folks!

06:58 pm - I swear cell phones are nothing but a SCAM!
Holy farking bat guano on a stick. Went to the AT&T store yesterday to try and see about a free replacement for our phone. No way.

First of all, the replacement phone is a piece of shit basically. No bluetooth, no external antenna hookup, no data hookup. Nothing. It would probably break the first time someone looked at it crosseyed.

So that means going with one I'd have to PAY for, yet again! Not only THAT, but I'd have to sign ANOTHER two year contract after just freeing myself from the last one, AND of course all the external hardware which costs even MORE.

I'd go with a Tracfone, but have no idea if the phone itself would have the same kind of hookups and all that, and whether I could even DO data transfer over it, blah blah blah. Probably not.

It's almost enough to make one want to go without for a while. Tried to get a replacement battery for this one, but the store closed before I made out there.

What a scam. Obviously run to extract as much money out of you as possible.

02:04 pm - The latest round of blowups.
The truck's having problems with the Qualcomm system, and here we sit on an expedited load, with no other team available for it. Sooooo, we're running without one, and I guess customer service is bugging the crap out of our team leader, so we're trying to call in every four hours or so to let them know our whereabouts, when we expect to deliver, the hours we've run and all that. And there was much rejoicing (Yay...)

A side effect of this is once we deliver up in WA, the closest OC for repairs will be Portland, and so we might be able to run back to the house for a while, at least long enough to pick up my new license. They say it's in the wiring now but...hmmmm I'm not so sure. Problem seems to have gotten worse after they replaced the antenna, sooooo... maybe it's a bad one? Dunno for sure.

At least got the tape player and the faceplate on the stereo replaced, as the motor had burned out on the player, and the volume nob had worn out on the faceplace. Yay.

Now of course the wireless card I had gotten for the old laptop seems to be back to its old tricks of either a)making it reboot spontaneously or b)making it freeze.

Not sure if the battery running low affected why it would do that or not. That's about the only thing different that I know of. *shrug*

Nuts. Now the cell phone is acting up when used as a modem. For voice calls it seems to be okay. I think there's a loose physical connection in the phone somewhere, because it'll spontaneously drop net connections as well.

Seems like stuff's been breaking left and right on us recently. The cell antenna, the XM radio, a modem cable, and now this.

Okay, so I/you/all that is gets a glimpse of the beyond. What is the true existence/non existence, some funky quantum state encompassing Eris and Aneris as they play their eternal game of creation, destruction, and recreation.

These "masks" as you will. What are they? What are they for? Something trying to define itself by defining what it is NOT? Not a human, not a tree, not a galaxy, or a bunch of particles, or the number pi, orrrrrr...gah.

X = square root of negative one.

The swirling fiery spectacle of Abraxas. For whose benefit? Mine? Surely you jest.

Let's just say that perhaps I've been to the top of the mountain and I DON'T want to come down. It just seems like trying to interact with senselessness is also senseless. And of course, even at the top of the mountain there's still sky above you. Can you fly?

Chop wood, carry water. What for? To what end? For whose benefit?

01:46 am - Irked on many fronts
Was ready for a nice nap down at the Laredo OC, when I feel an OMFG BAD itch on my hip. Start to scratch, and feel a bump. Can only mean one thing. Attack of what I affectionately call "The little silver and white biting bitches" aka mosquitoes. Now I have some nice lumps there, my left thigh, my right shoulder, right elbow, and left wrist. Not all bad though. Made sure that for at least two of them it was their last meal EVER. Smack! Small red and black blotch.

And for some reason Hotmail's not working quite correctly either. I can't seem to read new messages by clicking on the links, or switch folders. Seems like I can do everything else though. Probably untested code again.

Lastly and I know this will sound shallow but George Noori backed out at the last second with doing the Ouija board experiment tonight. Crap crap crap. To say I am disappointed doesn't even begin to cover it. I fricking HATE being built up like this. I can understand why he did it, but that helps me about as much as a running garden hose during a thuderstorm, which seems to be the weather right now.

Okay, I've sat here long enough, time to put some more miles down and hopefully get away from the bitches' breeding grounds to more arid country. Heading back to Hell-A yet again.

Support Our Troops. WTF is that supposed to mean anyway? For too many it seems to mean blindly agree with everything our leaders say and do.

My favorite quota on the situation comes from one of our former presidents, Theodore Roosevelt.

"Patriotism means standing by your country. It does not mean standing by your president."

Just had to get that out.
